- Do you think illegals driving drunk who have deatiners should be released on personal recognizance like here?
BRIDGEWATER — A cell-phone caller alerted police in the nick of time as an erratic driver traveling along Route 24 wiping out traffic cones at 60 mph, headed toward a work crew. Once the call came in, Trooper Thomas Dunphy got on his cruiser’s loudspeaker system and told the crew to get out of the way. Dunphy was working the road detail just after midnight on Friday. State police Sgt. Michael Popovics credits the cell caller as likely thwarting a fatal crash. Even though one of the workers tried to move out of the way, Popovics said he was almost hit when the car came to a stop inches from his grinding machine. Dunphy arrested Carlos H. Mendoza, 48, of Bristol, R.I., and charged him with driving under the influence of alcohol, a marked lanes violation and reckless operation of a motor vehicle. Popovics said Immigration and Customs Enforcement determined that Mendoza was an illegal alien and placed a detainer on him. Mendoza was arraigned on Friday in Brockton District Court and released on personal recognizance by Judge Rosemary B. Minehan. He is scheduled for a Nov. 17 hearing. Immigration and Customs Enforcement could not be reached for comment. On Aug.20, a 23-year-old Milford man was killed when police said Nicolas D. Guaman, an illegal immigrant from Ecuador who was driving drunk, struck him on his motorcycle. The incident sparked anti-illegal immigration protests in Milford including a demonstration outside Town Hall before a meeting with representatives of the Ecuadorean government. On Aug.24, President Barack Obama's uncle was arrested in Framingham on suspicion of drunken driving. Officials said Onyango Obama is in the country illegally. A No. We know he will never show up for court. But, he will drink and drive again putting innocent lives in jeopardy.
