- When repainting a motorcycle gas tank what is the best paint to use?
I am wanting to repaint the tank on my 79 Honda CX500C Custom but I don't want it to look like crap. What type of paint would be best to use to avoid peeling due to gas spills? Is there any kind of special paint I should use? Is there some other special steps I need to take in prepping besides the standard sanding? Keep in mind I want to do this myself with some spray-bombs. I've seen some videos on how you can get a near professional look with some clear coat finisher and wet sanding but none of those were clear on the type of paint used (acrylic lacquer or enamel) nor were any of them on gas tanks. Little help now, please...
A Automotive paint, gas tanks always get gas on them no matter how careful you are and spray can paint does not resist gas. I have painted a many bikes and had excellent results except for my very first one. The first one I used primer, value shade, base and clear, it looked beautiful till I spilled a little gas on it. Thats when I learnt not to used anything less than paints and clears with hardeners.
