- do i need to buy a chip for my motorcycle if i put a intake and exhaust on it?
i have a 2009 HD super glide custom with V&H mufflers and am looking to put a new intake on it. will i need to put a chip in it?

A WOW....the "thumbs down" FAIRIES are on the prowl tonight!!!......oh well....just goes to show how uninformed THEY are... The following link will explain ALOT about how fuel injection works, read the entire article and you will see what I am talking about below..... http://www.harley-riders-guide.com/harley-davidson-efi.html There is no such thing as a "chip" for HD....HOWEVER.....TUNING ....IS....CRITICAL!!!! It MUST be done!!!! "Stage 1" download will NOT work on your bike PROPERLY...a Stage 1 is a GENERIC "all-around" map designed by HD for Screamin Eagle Slip-Ons and Screamin Eagle Air Cleaner ONLY...ANY deviation from them and the download is basically useless. The V&H mufflers flow ALOT more than the SE slip-ons and any other intake than the SE will flow more air. The SE SUPER TUNER.. http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2008/04/17/harley-davidson-screamin-eagle-pro-efi-super-tuner/ ....new for 2010 on 07-up HD's includes SMART TUNE, which is bascially an auto-tune feature and is EASILY used.....AND...unlike the Power Commanders and such...there is nothing to add to the bike, no mounting, no facbrication to mount, etc..... The sSuper Tuner remaps the factory ECM...once it's done, simply unplug it!!!! My answer to a similar question.... ANY change to the intake system, allowing more air in REQUIRES fuel remapping. Dyno tuning WILL maximize it's fullest potential. Stay away from Power Commanders and other types of "piggy-back" controllers.....go with the Screamin Eagle Super Tuner!!! The ST is FULLY tuneable....fuel, timing curve and advance, rev-limit accelerator pump feature, auto decel enleanment to eliminate exhust popping when letting off the throttle, and more. The new 2010 software for the ST even has an "auto-tune" feature, even though DYNO tuning is more precise, this auto-tune feaure is sufficient for a mildly modified bike. Not only will dyno tuning gain you HP & TQ and make the bike run to its fullest potential, it will also COOL the engine temps by 20-25 degrees, making the engine last longer. If you have ANY questions email me here through my profile, I will be glad to help. Dyno TUNING is....NOT running the bike to tell how much power it makes...it IS dialing in the air/fuel ratio and ignition timing at EVERY rpm and throttle postion to deliver maximum power and fuel economy. And it does NOT take 4-5 hours, generally 2-3. Now, with auto-tuning, it only takes about an hour, all you have to do is run the bike on the dyno, the Super Tuner will record what the bike is doing, you download this info into the software and the software will self adjust the map for optimum performance. Dyno TUNING is essential as the bike is set up lean due to EPA regulations, adding more air will make it run TOO lean and HOT.....adding more air requires adding more fuel.....anyone with an ounce of common sense knows this. Fuel injection systems can MILDLY compensate for rich or lean conditions due to altitude and atmospheric changes, but can not self compensate for the extra air added by a hi-flowing air cleaner. EDIT....FYI for everyone.....BAFFLED SLIP-ONS alone (similar to Screamin Eagles which are restrictive compared to Rineharts, and V&H's), do not REQUIRE remapping...BUT...when you add a hi-flo air cleaner, you are adding more air to an already extremely lean engine...this MANDATES adding more fuel!!!.....mechanics everywhere are really getting tired of doing engine rebuilds due to FRIED top ends to due excessively lean conditions. Every "thinks" their bike runs "ok"....UNTIL...they actually have it tuned and then when they pick up 10-15 hp/tq and the bike is running 25 degrees cooler....they realize how critical proper tuning is....it is no different than a carbed bike....would you change your air cleaner and exhaust and not rejet????......this is just stupid.....do it right from the start and it will save you a TON of money down the road and it will run better than ever...and COOLER than ever. Everyone thinks HD is full of $hlT....don't just take HD's word for it...ask ANY tuning center, American or import....they will ALL tell you the same...... MORE AIR IN AND OUT MEANS MORE FUEL NEEDED!!!!
- Where's the air intake in the Harley-Davidson motorcycles?
As far as my Internet skills have taken me, the HD air intake is on the front, right side....Correct? Please provide a link to a pic or two. Thanks & take care. P.S. Sorry about the totally novice question; I'm into sports, not custom :S

A The intake ports on a Harley-Davidson are on the inside of the V. Air filter is always on the right side of a Harley-Davidson engine.
