- I need to get a guestimate for the salvage value of a Harley Davidson 883 Sportster?
My husband had a motorcycle accident on March 2nd and his is considering buying back the motorcycle from the insurance company. We figured they would charge us around $400 to $600 to buy the bike back, but instead they said the value of the bike was $1600. I just wanted to get other opinions on the worth of the bike. The bike is a 1995 Harley Davidson 883 Sportster. It had approx. 6000 miles on it. It had custom pipes and handlebars. It had a larger gas tank (approx 5 gal). The bike is a total loss from the accident and is at a motorcycle shop. The guy that works at the shop told me that it wasn't worth more than $600 and that the insurance company is trying to screw us. He also said that an adjuster hasn't been out there to look at it yet, so how would they even begin to know the salvage value. I have to call the insurance company back and talk to them and just am not sure how to handle the call. Any advice would be appreciated. :) Thanks!
A You've got the cart in front of the horse here. If they haven't looked at it yet, they haven't even decided it's a total and made any type of offer. When they do look, should they decide to total it, they will make an offer. THAT is the time to ask about keeping the bike and seeing what salvage value is. Keep in mind if you do, they will issue a salvage title also, which has some ramifications and makes it hard to get insurance. If he wants parts, no problem. If he wants to fix and ride, there could be many problems. Some states will require an inspection, at a cost of around $300 before they will consider it road worthy again, so check into what's needed first. If the insurance is saying the worth of the bike is $1,600, it sounds like that will be their offer to you if it is a total. Bottom line, don't accept their offer and sign off on it unless and until you're happy with it.

- Who applauds the entrepreneurs ! ?
Great stuff ! All the folk having a ball down in Devon with the salvage. Importing goods, everything from baby napkins to BMW motorcycles reduces productivity and employment in UK,as well as promotes cheap labour in poor countries. Then there's the huge wildlife harm and pollution caused by this balls up. I am delighted to see those gaining all sorts of profitable items from this . They are helping to clear up this mess in the bargain. I bet ebay takes a sudden leap in sales over the coming weeks ! I only wish I was down there joining in the fun. Keep it up guys and happy hunting. " Trotters Independent Trading " rides again. Where are the Customs and Excise / Taxman's vultures on this one ! ?
A If I had the chance...I would be down there, beachcoming with them!
