Faq About Decals

Ken asks…

How can I safely remove decals from my car window w/o leaving residue behind or scratching the window?

I've taken off decals in the past trying to scrape them off and then using goo gone but either it somehow scratches the window and always leaves residue behind so, in the end, i end up covering that area of the window w/ another decal.

Is there anyway to remove a decal safely w/o creating more scratches to the window and that would remove all residue left behind from the decal?

Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated!

Motorcycle Store Staff answers:

Heat gun or hair dryer will allow you to peel most of it off with the least amount of sticky residue. Then common rubbing alcohol will get the remaining residue off.

Lizzie asks…

How do you remove decals from a vehicle?

What's the best way to go about removing professional decals from a vehicle?
We have a truck that has business decals ALL OVER IT, on the body and windows, and they need to come off.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

Motorcycle Store Staff answers:

You can use a razor blade on the ones on the windows . The ones on the body will be allot more trouble . You will have to use a heat gun and peal them off it won't be fun but that's the only way to get then off without screwing up the paint . The paint will be shinier than were they weren't so you will have to rub out the rest of the truck when you are done .

Susan asks…

How can I easily remove the decals from the side of my pontoon boat?

The boat is older and half the decals are missing already. I want to remove all the remaining decals so that I can prime and repaint, but I'm having a hard time. I've tried a heat gun, Goo Off, Goo Gone, and I can only get tiny pieces off at a time.

Motorcycle Store Staff answers:

I have used "Wood grain Remover" and it has worked relatively well. It is made by 3M products and is an aerosol spray and can be purchased from any automotive paint supplier or try the larger auto parts. It still has to be worked a little bit, so be patient and let it stay on long enough to work. If you have access to air or power tools 3M also makes a product that is called a "Bristle Disc" and works very well if you don't need to worry about paint removal (re-doing the boat). It will take off decals, but with the paint as well. They come in three different varieties soft, medium, and hard and 1" or 2" diameters. "Good Luck and Happy Boating"!
