Faq About Motorcycle Body Armor

David asks…
Is motorcycle body armor effective? What brand is most proven?
I mistakingly assumed that you knew I meant body armor with respect of impact.
Motorcycle Store Staff answers:
ABSOLUTELY YES... Go with CE-approved armor, and stuff that won't shift, that stays in place (thus, fit is EXTREMELY important). I'm not just talking road rash (and yes, a 70mph get-off CAN tear big holes out of leather). Go with kevlar-lined denim (Draggin' Jeans), thick leather pants, or cordura pants for abrasion resistance. For impact, don't settle for foam. Replace the cheap foam stuff with CE-approved armor for impact!
Don't forget about good boots (not just MX, though that's better than nothing) with ankle protection. Toes can get crushed in from the side, ankles can be crushed/twisted. Any advantage we can get is a plus... Remember, it's not just your average lowside/highside or 600ft. Butt-slide we have to think about... It's the eight-foot tall Hummer that doesn't see you between its door and the concrete Jersey barrier as it's changing lanes with a cell phone on and screaming kids in the back.

Donna asks…
What's some good, not super expensive, motorcycle body armor?
I've found relatively cheap vests that haven't gotten the greatest reviews, I've found the top-of-the-line Dainese gear, and I've found motocross/quad armor that looks cool and is the right price, but I don't know if it's rated for highway-speed crashes on pavement.
I'm completely new to the sport bike scene and I don't know if the cheap stuff is good enough, or if I should take the route of "It's my health, I should spend as much money as I can to get the best protection possible."
Thanks in advance.

You get what you pay for. I like 500 denier cordura/gore-tex armored touring gear (which happens to be locally made). I don't ride sport though, where fashion seems more important that safety

Susan asks…
What is the most protective body armor available for on-road motorcycle driving when falling from a motorbike?
How much do these outfits cost?
Motorcycle Store Staff answers:
I like the Aerostitch stuff
I have been to their factory
They actually drag weighted sandbags down city streets to test abrasion resistance, and they are custom fit
