Michael asks…

Why do motorcycle jackets have a double neck collar?

Why do motorcycle jackets have a double neck collar?

I have found that many motorcycle clothing traditions go back to useful older traditions from horseback riding and the age of open-air flying.
Double breasted jackets stay closed better at high speeds and help to keep you warmer.
Silk neck scarves keep the neck warm and prevent chaffing.
Goggles and masks keep the wind and bugs out of the eyes, nose and mouth.
Leather is a natural armor.

Most high quality leather motorcycle jackets are double breasted, with snaps, zipping pockets, and a double neck collar. I still have not figured out the advantage or use of the double neck collar.

Is the scarf supposed to wrap around the neck a second time between whose layers?
Is one collar supposed to tuck up into the helmet?
It can't just be for looks.
I read recently that silk scarves were originally popular with open-cockpit plane pilots because their necks would get chaffed looking for the enemy while rubbing on the frost of their jacket collars. That is also why they were called "flying leathernecks".

I found that a silk scarf works well on motorcycles, too.

I understand that and ascots (basically a silk necktie that goes INSIDE the shirt) were popular with pilots and horse-riders for the same reason.

Linda asks…

As far as women's motorcycle jackets go...?

I like the look of a leather jacket and I want one with a lot of padding/armor/whatever, but I really hate the idea of leather and I'd feel like such a jerk and hypocrite if I bought and wore one. So is there such thing as a faux leather women's motorcycle jacket that would give me just as much protection as real leather? Also, where might I find something like this? Thanks :)

Motorcycle Store Staff answers:

I don't own a leather jacket. I wear textile riding gear. The gear has served me well. I too agree that a rider needs to be concerned with protection verses fashion.
Take a look at the selection offered at New Enough. Good folks to deal with and a good exchange policy.
