Sandra asks…
Can a junkyard motorcycle be salvaged in NYS?
Im looking to get a junked bike and rebuild it. I wanted to know if I would be able to apply for a salvage title in NYS or if the bike would become a lawn ornament?
Motorcycle Store Staff answers:
First, you need to check that the title is "salvage" or "rebuildable". A lot of bikes are sold by the insurance companies as "parts only" and these cannot be registered later on.
Then, once you rebuild it, make sure that (1) you have photos of the bike before and after the repair and (2) that you keep original invoices for all parts that you purchase. The bike has to go to a DMV inspection and all they care about is that you are not using stolen parts. They don't care if your bike is actually running!
If you meet all the above and fill in the required paperwork, you shouldn't have any problems.
