Faq About Sportster Parts Manual

John asks…

I have two different length pushrods on my 94 sportster 1200?

I was taking apart my front cylinder and cataloging the parts when i noticed that the push rods were slightly different in length I believe the longer of the two was toward the front (or exhaust pipe side) of the engine. Is that the correct location of the longer push rod or am i missing something? They are definitely not worn compressed or damaged in any way so im assuming they should be different lengths any help would be great as i dont have the service manual.

Motorcycle Store Staff answers:

They're color coded, each one should have a dab of paint on them. The color will tell you which cam they go to.

Might want to also try http://www.sportster.org/ as they have a pretty good email list.

Mary asks…

1988 sportster brake switch stuck on?

a kid hit me in a parking lot, the bike fell on its rear brake pedal and now the brake light stays on, not dim/bright as it should be.

the kid ran away in his jeep and im left to fix it myself. where is the switch so i could replace it? is it behind the sprocket cover? or inside the master cylinder? is it hydralically controlled or by levers with the pedal itself, help me out please. i would buy a manual but im short on cash, only enough for the parts right now

my indy assumed a wire rubbed through under the fender and shorted it on, but thats not the case. I already checked

Motorcycle Store Staff answers:

Should be an inline pressure swiech sound like a wire prob though ck for a short somewhere unless the switch itself got damaged and is shorting out

Laura asks…

Harley Warrentee question...if I do my own service (not HD Shop) next 5K mile will the warrentee still be good

Just wondering...took it in for 5,000 mile service as the manual suggest...182 dollars later all I got was a fluid change and a check over. I used to do all of that stuff in my garage at home when I had my HD sportster (no warrentee).

I was going to do all that myself anyhow, once the warrentee time is over but just curious if I can still use warrentee (if I need to) when I do my own service...

Someone told me all I have to do is keep the recipts from purchasing oil and parts and that would be good enough just incase I need to use the warrentee...
Good answers, but let me refraise...I want to do the work in my garage...as I have done before on my sporty. There will be no bill of sale for service, just the recipt from buying the oil and parts. I don't want to take it to a shop for the 10K, 15K or anything after...I just want to do all my own work (at least the simple stuff I have the know how to do)...is that ok for the warrentee...got about 1 year and 8 months left on it.
Yeah...I will not get an extended warrentee...the tree year warentee came stock with the bike though...

But if they ask if I want to extend it I'd say no...chnces are most bikes will not have any major problem if you take care of them...and if something does go wrong then I'll just pay to get the parts (if I can do the work) or pay to have it fixed.

That someone is correct. It is spelled out in your owners manual. As long as you do the required service and document the info, have reciepts etc you are fine.
For your info:

The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (15 U.S.C. 2302(C))

This federal law regulates warranties for the protection of consumers. The essence of the law concerning aftermarket auto parts is that a vehicle manufacturer may not condition a written or implied warranty on the consumers using parts or services which are identified by brand, trade, or corporate name (such as the vehicle maker's brand) unless the parts or service are provided free of charge. The law means that the use of an aftermarket part alone is not cause for denying the warranty. However, the law's protection does not extend to aftermarket parts in situations where such parts actually caused the damage being claimed under the warranty. Further, consumers are advised to be aware of any specific terms or conditions stated in the warranty which may result in its being voided. The law states in relevant part:

“No warrantor of a consumer product may condition his written or implied warranty of such product on the consumers using, in connection with such product, any article or service (other than article or service provided without charge under the terms of the warranty) which is identified by brand, trade or corporate name...” (15 U.S.C. 2302(C)).
