The market will catch up, basically the demand is not there yet because people don't always start modifying a brand new bike right a way. Give it some time and the stuff will come. And as to the twin cam, it does have a "weak link" there is a nylon/plastic guide for the cam chain that wears out fairly quickly, there is a fix, a gear drive conversion, $1000.I'll stick with my stroked Evo.

Brand new Harley Fat Boy. Which type of aftermarket pipes?

Checked with parts at the dealership. Screamin Eagle pipes with all the parts, CPU upgrade, and labor is about $800. Can you just run straight pipes without all that other stuff? Or, is it necessary due to being fuel injected? Is there a better alternative?

Motorcycle Store Staff answers:

I am running late this morning, but I will try to answer your question more tonight.

But a quick note, no, you CAN'T run straight pipes with no tuning of the ecm. If you are going this far, you NEED to have a h-flo air cleaner installed, let the engine breathe...pipes & no air cleaner...imagine try to run a marathon inhaling through one nostril and exhaling through your mouth...not very effieicent is it????

EDIT...continued.....

I guess James doesn't realize how severely restrictive HD's mufflers and air cleaners are....a SIMPLE change to a SE air cleaner and SLIP-ON mufflers and proper tuning will yield about 12 hp and 10 ft/lbs of torque...AND...drop the engine temps as much as 15-20 degrees!!!...and they are not THAT loud, but sound GOOD.

Now back to your question....
Technically, ANY change to exhaust or intake requires injection remapping, but in the real world, HD's SLIP-ON mufflers only can be installed with no remapping, it won't run the best, but "ok" it will still be very lean and hot running. Aftermarket pipes are ALOT less restrictive than HD's mufflers and will REQUIRE remapping. ANY change to the air cleaner REQUIRES remapping!!! HD, like everyone else, runs their bikes lean for EPA standards, lean conditions create excess heat which is bad, richen the mixture up, it runs better with more power and runs cooler.

Read up on two of my answers regarding PROPER engine tuning......

Rebuilding a 1998 Harley Roadster 1200 Motor?

I bought a 1998 Harley Roadster last year. I had some problems with it and I brought it to a Bike mechanic. After he looked at it he told me the Motor needed to be completely rebuilt. He told me it was going to cost close to $6000 after parts and labor. This is rebuilding the motor to stock with no aftermarket performance parts. I have spoken to a couple backyard mechanics since I dropped it off and have been told that I am getting taken to the cleaners. Well am I?

Eddie....first off, we need alot more detailed info. Please add SPECIFICALLY what you were told is wrong with the engine. Give as many details as possible.

A rebuild can cost $1500 up to $6000 or more, howver the $6k figure would include a complete new crank assy, heads, cases, etc.

As your question is stated, we have no idea what is wrong with the engine, so no-one can give any better details.

If you prefer, you can email me through my profile with your regular email address and we can talk further from there.

I am a Sportster specialist, 22+ year HD Master Tech, and currently own a Sporty engine powered 99 Buell X1 with over 140 horsepower.....total cost of bike purchase AND engine mods approx $7500

Motorcycle Store Staff answers:

You can buy it from him... But getting it registered and tagged may be a bit harder. A Bill Of Sale is not proof of ownership. If the bike is not already in the DMVs database, you may be able to apply for a lost title. Otherwise, the currently titled owner will need to apply for the duplicate title.

So why didn't your friend get the bike registered and titled???

Non rebuildable motorcycle possible titling?

I recently bought a non rebuildable motorcycle, it is actually rebuildable and if i rebuild it i can make more money selling it/enjoying it than parting it out. i have a bill of sale but no salvage title because the insurance deemed it non repairable. I know it is possible to obtain a title from maine pretty easily but that was for a barn find bike (no title bike) im not sure if i can apply that to a non repairable bike. thanks
Entidtil trust me its rebuildable, all it needs is forks, a front wheel, tank, chain, and clutch cover, at the time it was totaled the parts were too expensive, its an 11 year old bike so i can rebuild it for possibly $600 and sell it for $1300

All depends if it's a bike that's in demand for parts. I can tell you Honda Nighthawk parts are in high demand (I owned one, I know)

Here's three ways to tell -

1) Check eBay for your parts. See what they're selling for on there. Guys like yourself and cycle salvage yards sell parts on there.

2) Check salvage yards and see what they're getting for the. Fill out the form for a few parts you think will bring high dollar and see what you get. Engines usually run $300-$500 depending on mileage, size, etc, although most guys part the engines as shipping a whole engine is expensive.

3) Find a parts fiche online for your bike and see what they cost OEM.

These salvage yard search engines send your inquiry to yards all across the country and they'll email you with a price. That'll show you what he price on the market is.

BTW - whatcha sellin?

Would it be best to sell these under an auction, or out right selling on Ebay?

I'm selling a ton of motorcycle parts for my dad on Ebay. He's already priced them and some of them are pretty expensive because they've never been used before (Seats, exhaust pipes, tires, etc..). I've used Ebay before, and I've always used just the buy it now option, but I was wondering what you all think would be the best way to get these things sold? Auction, or not?

Thanks in advance!

Motorcycle Store Staff answers:

That's a tough one - but, I would say set a reserve and sell at auction. Motorcycle parts are particularly likely to sell near or at retail on eBay - don't ask me why. But, I've sold a good lot of Harley factory takeoffs on eBay, and seen them go for as much or more than their aftermarket counterparts.

My '01 Sportster has a 21-inch laced wheel now. The illustration of the 19-inch looks to be for a wider profile tire like is used on a Dyna. Is it possible the application data got switched in the catalog? Are any of the resident Harley experts familiar with these wheels and applications?

Are you wanting the 21 or 19 for your bike? Like James above said, the 1200 Customs came stock with a 21, and swapping the 19 for a 21 is done commonly. Either one will work, for your bike, a narrow glide, make sure you get a narrow glide 21, NOT a FXDWG 21 (Wide Glide), stick with the same tire size as you have now, it SHOULD be a 80/90-21, but it could possibly have a 90/90-21, if so, this will do you just fine. The 19 rims use a 90/90-19 or 100/90-19 tire. Both 19 & 21 rims are 2.15" wide.

I have recently purchased a set of saddlebags made from genuine buffalo leather and I can say that the build quality is great for the price. Since then I am only shopping for Harley Davidson's accessories from there. Check the resource for that purpose.

What are the differences between the Harley Davidson Sportster and the Harley Davidson Dyna?

Looking through the Harley Davidson catalog of motorcycles I can't figure out what the specific differences are between the Dyna and the Sportster such that the Dyna costs about $6000 more. What do you get for this extra $6000? Also, is the Sportster really just "a Woman's bike"? Are men who ride them mocked by other Harley owners?

Motorcycle Store Staff answers:

The Sportster is a smaller lighter bike with a smaller motor,(883) or (1200) The motor, primary drive and trans are all a shared unit. The Dyna is a "Big Twin" 80" (1340) or an 88" for newer models. The motor is a unit, the primary drive is a unit and the trans is a unit. The Dyna is a longer ,bigger and heavier bike than the sporty. Sportsters are ( usually) a first Harley, a stepping stone to a big twin. Some never out grow them but most do. My old lady rode her 1200 for a year or so,then we got her a FXR which is similar( But superior ) to the Dyna. These days I see many chicks on big bikes so as a woman you may start on a Sportster and graduate to a Big Twin just like the boys do. And yes guys who ride Sporties from time to time will get some grief for it.

Gear shifting on a motorcycle (new rider question)?

I'm a new motorcycle rider and just purchased a Yamaha V-Star 250. I would have bought bigger, but I'm a fairly petite woman and was advised by more experienced riders not to buy over what I was comfortable with at first (and I am still getting over being nervous). I ride ATVs and used to ride really primative dirtbikes as a kid, so I am not a bad rider for being a newbie. However, I am having one heck of a time shifting gears smoothly. If I am sitting on the bike and not moving, I can shift up and down fine. But if I am riding and need to speed up or down, I can't "sense" the shift as well, and it's awkward. Do other people have this problem? How do you overcome it so shifting is seamless and natural? I thought it was my boots at first, but I have the issue whether I have on boots, sneaks, whatever. Any honest and experienced answers would be really, really appreciated!
My problem is getting the shift to engage smoothly while I am riding. It's as if I'm "missing" it or can't get the "sweet spot" on it while I am moving. I know the shift itself isn't broken or stuck, because I have no problem shifting (practice-like) if sitting still. It's like a coordination problem.

Is your question you dont know the proper time ti shift?

If thats the case then you need to get familiar with the sound of your bike. Im guessing you have no RPM guage right? If not the do this. Crank the bike up, let it idle in neutral, then just turn the throttle wide open all the way and count "mississippi one mississippi two" then let go. If you ever hear that sound when you counted to two that means you need to shift because you are redlining the bike.

The ideal time to shift would be between the noise you heard at about one sec. In case you dont know, the "proper" way to shift, when you hear your RPM's getting really high you left off the throttle and at the same time pull in the clutch. Once thats done "kick" or knock the shifter up into the next gear. Then at the same time you let the clutch out get back on the throttle.

It will take time for you to get to know that bike and the right times to hit the clutch and gas combo but all it takes is practice and eventually you will be able to shift nice and smoothly

EDIT: those are nice bikes too, my sis had the same one as a starter bike. Heh i road it around sometimes just because it was more comftorbly than my honda CBR600

I want to buy a motorcycle- is it really automatic death?

I would like to get a motorcycle but my parents keep telling me it's automatic death. Is this true? Obviously some accidents just happen and there's really nothing you can do about it, but if you plan on riding responsibly and safely is it really that bad?

I'm 19 years old and starting to get to the point where I'm going to need my own form of transportation- unfortunately being driven around by my parents or borrowing their cars after driving them to/from work just isn't cutting it anymore. I've been thinking about getting a motorcycle because until I graduate from college the only times I would use it is in the summer, it's also cheaper and gets better gas mileage. After college I plan on living in a city so having a motorcycle would allow me to avoid some traffic problems and possibly parking situation.

I'm a very safe driver and I've never gotten any kind of ticket or been in an accident. I also plan on never riding at night, always wearing a helmet/other safety gear, taking a motorcycling class, never driving under the influence of anything, and having a really LOUD horn for stupid drivers who aren't paying attention.

I keep seeing things about how motorcycles are basically automatic death, but I've been riding a regular bike on the roads ever since I learned as a little kid and drivers are just as mean and unwatchful about kids on bikes as they are about motorcycles so I figure I've already got some experience of having to watch my back as well as everyone else on the road.

So is getting a motorcycle stupid? I've always thought that if you were smart about it and drove conservatively and safely it's not any different from riding a bike down a busy street. Also would it really be cheaper because insurance would be higher since you have nothing between you and the road but less because motorcyclists don't cause accidents. What is good/bad about having a motorcycle and is it okay to use one?

Any advice/comments you have would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've been throwing my leg over 2-wheeled, powered vehicles for 45 years; since I was knee-high to a grasshopper.

The worst crash I've ever been in was 100% my fault. I was being a stupid 17-year-old and it almost killed me. I have a handicap hang tag to prove it.

Since then, I have been in quite a few close calls, but in every single one of them, I anticipated the misdeed of the other driver.

Always assume that guy or girl coming toward you with their left blinker on is going to turn in front of you. Always assume that car waiting to turn onto the road you are on is going to pull out in front of you. At the worst possible moment. Always assume that car coming behind you while you are waiting to turn left doesn't see you. Therefore, don't put yourself in that predicament; if you have to stop at an intersection to turn, don't do it if there is traffic coming behind you, plan your route differently. Little things like that is why I am still here able to write this. With all the miles I have on bikes, it's no accident that I haven't been clobbered. I ride as if I am completely invisible to cars and trucks. It has served me well.

So no, it's not automatic, but you have to love motorcycles and you have to be on high alert all the time. Yeah, you might be ok for a few years or 10,000 or 20,000 miles, but over the long run, you have to be vigilant and alert.

I have a car but I'm planning on giving it to my sister when i move out for college because it's very busy around the university and i don't want to pay for car parking in the dorms. I'm thinking about getting a motorcycle because they are good on gas, cheap, and it would be better than using public transportation. i think it would cost me around $200 a month total for a motorcycle which is about what I'm paying for my car insurance now.
Some things to think about. You have ridden so you don't need to think about that except to be always alert to traffic.

Where is school?
Can you ride all year long?
What would you have to carry on a regular basis? (As an art student a long time ago, daily, I had typically a tool bag, 2 portfolios, one for each of my studios, a mammoth art history book, and classes a mile away. I would have needed a touring bike. Not that I didn't want one.)
It's not always sunny so weather could be a factor unless you're a hardened rider.
If school is in an urban setting, it might not be the best idea (traffic, parking, security, etc.)
The economy is a very good selling point for sure. We're all thinking about it.

Still- after you've slept on it, it might be what you want and need.
Hope this helps. Best wishes for your future.

What Harley Davidson seat has the part number RDW-92/61-0067? Came off a 2006 Dyna. I think a tallboy?

It was taken off a 2006 Dyna. I think it's a Tallboy seat... 16" width, 12" pillion, and definitely had me sitting higher on the bike.
Has the Harley "symbol" in the plastic right above the part number.

Thanks!!

Using low octane gas in Harley-Davidson motorcycle?

Harley-Davidson recommends using high octane (92+) gasoline in their motorcycles. Does anyone have experience using lower octane gasoline and does it make a difference on how the bike runs?

Motorcycle Store Staff answers:

Alot of folks say it doesn't make a difference,..... The higher octane rating allows the cylinder to run a little cooler, and waits for the spark to light it off....... Detonation robs the air cooled motor of power. The higher octane doesn't necessarily make it run better, it just keeps it from running worse. I use about 25-40% avgas in the hottest part of summer to completely eliminate detonation problems.
