- Need help convincing my parents to let me ride a motorcycle.?
Alright, here's the deal. I'm 17 years old, I will be 18 in June but still living with my parents until I go to college, the whole "When you're 18, you're free" thing doesn't apply to me since my parents are paying for about 1/3 of my college tuition. I am a very responsible person, good grades in school, smart, and I don't really speed, I generally do about 5 over around town, obviously a bit faster on the highways (nothing crazy, just going with traffic), nothing that adults don't do. I've been driving for a year and a half when I'd be getting my bike license, and I also was on my local Fire and Rescue (took my EMT class etc...) last year but have had to stop doing it because of my classes and such, plan to help again this summer when I'm out of school. I KNOW the risks, I KNOW motorcycles are dangerous, I KNOW that every person in a car looks straight through them, it's a fact of riding, I'm not doing this to get girls, or look cool (already have a girlfriend haha). I am doing this for ME, because I love being on two wheels, been riding competitively on my mountain bike since I was like 3. Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with two wheeled vehicles with motors, I'm not ignoring this and I'm not saying my biking experience helps at all with motorcycling. Now, here's some other information. I already own a motorcycle, a 1994 Honda CBR600F2. I bought it used obviously, fairings off it and a few things missing to be street legal, I've fixed it up myself, paid for it all myself, no help from parents, haven't asked for a dime. I have been on the bike a few times, just around my block and around the parking lot's at my school (where I'm working on it) to test out the speedo and tach and other stuff I've been working on, never been on the real road. I have a nice full leather jacket with back protector and shoulder pads, plan on installing chest protectors as well. I also have a used Shoei that I got for cheap just to use around the parking lot, I will be buying a brand new RF-1100 in the high vis yellow this summer if I can ride. I will also be purchasing riding boots, gloves and of course leg protection (armored shorts and knee pads with a set of kevlar liners with jeans over top, I know it is not as good as leather but I don't want leather). I will definately be taking the BRC, I actually will most likely take the riders edge course through the harley dealership (3-4 days, 25 hours). My dad had a motorcycle when he was younger. I know, and definitely will be following ATGATT, I'm looking to get some enjoyment out of riding, not a wheelchair. I know it's a matter of when, not if I will crash, and I know to be prepared, always have a route out. I really just need some ideas on what I can do to convince them, I'm really up for anything, thanks!
A I dont get it you already have a motorcycle? Your parents didn't say anything when you bought it, fixed it up, and rode in the parking lot? If you wanna convince them, whatever you just typed here, tell them...You do seem responsible. Anyways, if they say no, there is no way in convincing them. Parents are parents. When you turn 18 legally make your decision.
