- Looking @ opening Motorcycle business and or MX clothing - HOW, Help needed plz!?
We live in NSW and are looking at starting a Motorcycle business and or an online MX clothing store. I would apreciate any help or suggestions people might have on the following! What is involved in opening a Motorcycle shop? eg dealerships etc Can I have multiple franchises eg Honda, Suzuki? How do I organise a specific brand eg Honda? How do you organise what bike/brands/franchises etc? Do I source MX clothing from the USA or from Australia? What company? eg if I want to sell "Fox" where do I go? Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated Thanks
A I'm presuming you have somewhat limited capital (like most entrepreneurs tend to). In that case, your best bet is start out small, by opening a virtual store on eBay, selling motorcycle gear. But, you need to be aware that there are a LOT of people doing just that. I shop for my gear on eBay all the time, and there's never a shortage. If you open a virtual store, you need to find a "hook" - something no one else has, that you think will be a hot selling item. With regards to dealerships - as far as I know, Harley-Davidson is the only brand who demands exclusivity. IE if you open a Harley shop, you cannot have any other motorcycle brands under the same roof. The other brands are much more flexible about this sort of thing. Best thing to do is go to each brand's corporate website (find it on Yahoo or Google) and look for a link containing franchise information. If you don't see it, look for the "contact us" link. They will tell you how much you need to have up front, and what the rules are for using their name. Same thing applies to the different brands of biker clothing. Once you decide which way you want to go - next thing you need to think about is marketing. This is particularly critical if you have a virtual business, online store, etc. One effective way is to offer commissions for referrals that result in sales. For example, you come up with a banner ad...ask for it to be posted on the website of a related business (like mine - Worldwide Motorcycle Tours)...then every time someone finds your business through the link on my site and buys something, you pay me a small commission on the sale. Have you ever had any business or marketing courses? You might find those really helpful, ESPECIALLY if you're planning on being a virtual business. It's not easy getting your website noticed, so it's very important to know just how to do it. Hope this was helpful to you! -Phillip Gain CEO, Worldwide Motorcycle Tours http://www.worldwidemotorcycletours.com
