FAQ - Customer Questions - Motorcycle Battery Charger Reviews
- motorcycle battery charger doesn't seem to work?
I am using a Yuasa 12V 900mA Charger to recharge my motorcycle battery, which has been completely drained. Following the instructions which were included with the charger, I've set up the battery to recharge, however the "Recharge" light does not come on. The AC power light is on, showing there is current, but no recharging is taking place. The connections are clean and free of corrosion. Any ideas?
A The model charger you are using is what is known as a "smart charger" these are very good for battery maintenance but there is one tiny design flaw with many of these "smart" models. Actually it is a safety circuit. They require a back voltage before they will initialize. HUH? Ok what this means is that there is a circuit built into the charger that is designed to protect the charger from overload. How do you overload a charger? Good question. Some folks might want to connect the charger up and use it as a power source to light up a headlamp for example. This normally would be too much of a draw on the charger and burn it out. A "smart" circuit is built in. The charger will only charge when it senses a battery connected to it. How does it do that? It must "see" at least 2 volts connected to the charging clips before it will start charging. Your battery is likely at 0 volts. the charger doesn't see it so it wont start charging. You need a more standard charger to get started, look for one with an analogue gauge on it like this one
